Disagreements with Tradition analyzes the novo Hispanic brotherhoods in an era where they were targets of the Borbon monarchy attacks, which thought them as a local menace towards the centralism of the power they impelled in their domains. The author shows that the origins, beliefs, government, economy, and devotion of these brotherhoods played a central role in the construction of political and religious life in New Spain, an aspect that would prove to be fundamental in the future construction process of the Mexican nation.
